Mercedes loves to pick out cards for people. We have a box of various cards that she often goes through and addresses to people in our family. I was the proud recipient of one of her choices this year for my birthday. She picked it out all by herself and even had everyone in the family sign it.Isn't that sweet. Little did she know just how perfect her card was.

What?! Did I read that right?! Wishing you peace at this time of sorrow! Yep, it was the perfect card. Hopefully she will be able to read by next year's birthday, if not I'm sure I'll have a good laugh. Didn't anyone in my family question the choice of cards?

End of Summer Hiatus

Hey TV shows have them, so can I! And yes, in Arizona, April is the beginning of summer, and furthermore, in Arizona, summer does last until the end of September(sometimes even October). Technically I'm starting up early. This blogging season is sure to bring action,surprises,drama,fun and much more. Okay that's TV, not my blog. It should definately be interesting though. Now it sounds like a documentary! Well you'll have to decide for yourself.

MP 3 Player

My dad turned 73 in March and so the music on my MP3 player this month is music that reminds me of him. I remember listening to these songs in the car whenever we went somewhere and I even have them on my playlist that I listen to regularly. I am grateful for my dad and appreciate him so much! I can't believe that it is already time for Courtney to come home from her first year at BYU! Time has really flown by. We are very excited for her to be home for a couple of months and to hear her fun college stories, and I'm sure there are a few that are not so fun.I have been forgetting and remembering and then forgetting and remembering to ask her for some of her pictures so that I can post them. Today I finally remembered at the right time. She has had a blast and is attending next year as a sophomore. She will be living in an apartment (Branbury for those familiar with Provo) with 3 of her 5 roommates. We can't wait to see you Court! Courtney and her Roommate Rachel

Just 16 years ago!
A handsome guy!

Today it is official, I have a 16 year old boy in my house! I am so excited for Cody! Mostly because he is going to become a priest and gets to bless the sacrament! He was so excited to get a new suit for his birthday and I must say he looks handsome in it! Cody is the most sensitive and compassionate boy I know. At home he doesn't like for his sisters to be upset and he does whatever he can do to make them happy. Just the other day he told Jesus that he really watches out for our dog Mitt and it makes him nervous if he can't hear him because he knows how much the girls love him. He said he knows that they would be devasted if they lost him. He is also becoming a great tennis player and is really working hard at school and seminary. Cody we love you and hope you have a very happy birthday!

The Age of Figuring Things Out

Kids at the age of five, going on six, are so funny! They are kinda' starting to figure some things out about life. Sometimes this works to our advantage and other times we are COLD BUSTED! Take,for instance, this conversation with Mercedes in the car today:

Mercedes: Mom, did you know that if one kid stays home by themselves the cops come?

Me: Yes, if you are not old enough to stay home then the cops come.

Mercedes: Well am I old enough to stay home by myself?

Me: No, you have to be older to stay home.

Mercedes: Then why do you always say "Mercedes hurry or I'm going to leave and you'll be by yourself?"

Me: (Trying hard to contain my laughter) Because it's scary to stay home by yourself when you are little and I want you to hurry.

Mercedes: Well I guess if you ever did that the cops would come! (little devilish laugh)

Sedona

Sedona has become a favorite place for our family and we wanted to share that with my sister Edwina and her family! We went on two hikes, West Fork and Bell Rock. It was a lot of fun and just gorgeous! We can't wait to take more of our family there!Edwina and Justin

This last weekend we went to Sierra Vista, AZ to celebrate my nephew Jayden's 8th birthday. We hade so much fun and we were excited to be able to celebrate a birthday with Jayden. It has been a long time because we haven't lived close enough. Jayden chose to have banana splits instead of a cake this year and it was yummy! Great idea, Jayden! We had fun at Peter Piper Pizza and the kids used their tickets to buy these funny mustaches. We all had to take a turn trying them on and taking pictures. Thanks for inviting us to your birthday celebration Jaydie Boy!

February MP3

I know that this month I should have love songs on my MP3 player but lately I have been very nostalgic. I was remembering some great memories I have of when I was young and it was cleaning day. My mom always played music while we cleaned, on her 8 track player, and there was one 8 track tape that I absolutely loved. It featured hits from the sixties and whenever I hear one of the songs it takes me back to that time. I really do have good memories of cleaning the house! Weird ha?

I like to think of myself as keeping a semi-clean house. My kids have to have their rooms clean before they can do other things, granted I'm not always able to go through their room with a white glove, fine tooth comb or anything. But still, semi-clean. Well, you would think that after all of these years that I would no longer be amazed by the things that come out of their rooms when we do a deep clean. Nope, it still amazes me and not in an awesome way, but in the way where you ask yourself "Did I really raise these people?" Now you may be thinking, "What possibly could she have found in their rooms, besides the wrappers stuffed in drawers, dirty clothes mixed with clean ones, and etc.?" So here is the run-down: 2 rolls of scotch tape (We now have 5 rolls because we just "kept running out" so I had to go out and buy more) 1 roll of packaging tape, my husband's Mag-Lite flashlight, a stack of dixie cups, an opened package of Sharpie markers that I had been wanting and bought for myself with a rainbow of colors (markers no where to be found),craft glue, my digital camera, a package of pepperoni (yep, you read right),2 orange peelers, 10 half-full water bottles (notice I said half-full instead of half-empty because I'm trying to use optimism here), a tooth scraper, a volt meter (you know, for checking electric currents!? I'm not even going to ask), a tube of toothpaste, and I should just stop now before you forbid your kids from coming to my house. Thanks for listening (reading) and If you have anything missing from your house just call me, it might be in one of my kid's rooms!

Megan turned twelve today! I remember the day she was born like it was yesterday. This has been a birthday of much anticipation for her, she finally gets to have sleepovers,she enters into the Young Women's program,and she finished her Faith in God! She had a great day, chocolate donuts in the morning, McDonald's for lunch instead of cafeteria food, some of the young women kidnapped her and took her for ice cream, and finally dinner at her favorite restaurant, Fuddrucker's.

I am so grateful for Megan! She is sensitive and compassionate towards others. Even her love for animals makes me happy! When I told her that her grandma, Auntie Rose, and Auntie Edwina were even there when she was born she said that she must be special. I'm glad that she knows how special she is!

I found this on a friend's blog (thanks Alyssa) and loved it. I've always wondered what I do with my days and this explains it! Of course when you add in church callings, reading scriptures, FHE, going to the temple, volunteering at school, etc. it's a miracle that we even have time to sleep!But we wouldn't have it any other way would we!
By the way the word in the last sentence is SNIT, not to be confused with any other word.

This month my blog MP3 player features music by Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi is music from my Jr. High/High School days :) I actually did see Bon Jovi's tour bus when I was on a school trip to DC. I did not however actually see Bon Jovi :( I revel in the fact that I loved Bon Jovi and my kids now(25 years later) love Bon Jovi! Oy that number hurts to say out loud. Anyways, I like to think about that fact when I want to feel younger or maybe I'm just grasping for for a connection to my teenagers. I love Bon Jovi music!

New Year's Resolutions

Yep it's that time of the year again. Resolution time, have you made yours? I have and I'm FOR SURE starting tomorrow (today doesn't count because it's still a holiday). First I have resolved to eliminate one unhealthy eating habit, broke that one today at about 10am. Next I decided that I will never buy another piece of exercise equipment, ever. Darn QVC, did you have to offer an anniversary sale on the Pilates Rebounder with NO shipping! It'll be here on January 11th. Finally, I will get up much earlier in the morning. I should have defined "earlier". Hey, I had to stay up late to ring in the New Year. You know, the same New Year when I will start all of the above mentioned resolutions. Next year I resolve to not make any resolutions that I will break in the first 24 hours!

Celebrating Talents

Meg had a band concert and she did great! I love band concerts, especially at this time of the year. The Christmas music is always beautiful to me and when it is played by children that are learning to develop their talents it sounds even better! Support your school's local band and arts programs, they need it! Even if you don't have kids in school go to a concert sometime. They are usually free. It doesn't get any better than that! Thanks for the beautiful music you bring to our home Meg!

Out of the Mouth of Babes

A couple of days ago I had some Christmas music playing in the family room. Jesus and I were enjoying a nice dance together when Mercedes requested that he dip me. All was going well UNTIL she said "Mom, if you were more skinnier dad could pick you up and twirl you around." We laughed out loud and then she said, puzzled by our laughter, "What, I saw you in your other pictures and you were much skinnier." That's it, no more Dancing with the Stars for that kid and absolutely NO MORE photo albums!

Schnepf Farms

Over the Thanksgiving weekend we went to visit Schnepf Farms, a local farm here in AZ. Apparently we were the only ones that decided to do so. I love showing my family a rip roaring good time! We made our own fun though. Thanks for coming to visit Brown Family!

The Return of the Ya-Ya's

My sisters and I take an annual Ya-Ya sisterhood trip (dubbed Ya-Ya Sisterhood by our husbands and children). This year we went to Disneyland for 4 days. My daughter Courtney joined us for a few days. She is 18 now so was eligible for the trip. (Rules are subject to change by the Ya Ya's, other requirements may be applicable) We always have the best time. Thank you so much to our husbands for keeping the home fronts going while we are away! Thank you, thank you! We laughed so much that I'm sure we added 20 years to our lives! We are the best examples that sobriety is way better than the alternative. It was another great Halloween! We ate dinner with a lot of our friends and we even met some great new friends! The food was yummy! Thanks to Michelle for hosting a fun event. Our kids went trick or treating and just when we thought that they were done they wanted to keep going! For about 2 hours! My feet hurt! At least I have lots of breakfast food now. Did I really just admit that? My dad will tell you nothing has changed with me since I was little except that I used to drink milk with my candy. I mostly take it straight now dad! We are down to two kids that go trick or treating now, a sure indicator of advanced aging! This year Jesus and I dressed up for our Trunk or Treat and a work party. We dressed up in 70's disco motif to take Jesus back to his high school years. No really that's how he dressed when he was in high school. He even had long hair.

What a beautiful baby!

Today is my niece Katryn's 10th Birthday! We wish we could be there for the party but we look forward to seeing her for Thanksgiving. Katryn is having a pirate party because she loves Elizabeth Swann from Pirates of the Carribean. Megan and Katryn love spending time together and have a blast every time. Katryn, we love you and hope that you have the best day!

A Halloween Visitor

Last night we had a Halloween visitor. An owl landed on our roof and we were so excited! We were only able to get one decent picture because it was dark. We were able to see him turn his head 180°. Way cool! There is a lot of folklore about owls and most of it isn't very uplifting, especially in America. In France,a difference is made between hiboux, eared owls, which are considered symbols of wisdom, and chouettes, earless owls, which are considered birds of ill omen.
Our owl had ears, thank goodness!
We decided that we are going to be French until the bad mojo wears off or until my kids get tired of me saying oui,oui(wee,wee) and asking them if they'd like frranch fries, frranch bread or frranch dressing. That's the extent of my french.
